Jagt og Outdoor messe / Hunting and outdoor fair trade

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Wed, March 28, 2018 15:34:18

DK:

Først prøver hun at komme under, men hun hopper hurtigt over, samler spontant op og kommer fint hjem.

Vixen mødte en løve på messen / Vixen met a lion on the trade fair

UK:
This weekend the Danish Association of Hunters held a trade fair (Hunting and Outdoor fair) in Odense. Long time ago, I saw that it would be possible to enter a competition called "Unofficial Danish Championship in Indoor Retrieving". It was supposed to be on cold game. As Vixen picks up every kind of game (except from fox), I felt comfortable participating. So I entered her. There was a limit of 10 participants on Saturday and 10 on Sunday. So I wasn’t guaranteed a spot.

After a few weeks, I was told that we were going to participate. However, the set-up had been changed so now the dogs had to retrieve dummies. OK with me.

On Sunday 25 March, Leif, Helle, Kim and I drove to Odense. I had seen some video of the completion on Saturday on Facebook, so I knew what I was about and I was not nervous. The dogs had to retrieve four different dummies from four different "terrains": Water, spruce, rough and a jump over a log. I knew that Vixen – in theory – could do the job. The uncertainty was if the surroundings affected her. We were in a trade fair hall with lots of people and lots of dogs, so everything could go wrong. On the other hand, Vixen is extremely focused when she works so I guessed that she would do fine.

You could get from 1-5 point for every retrieve. Furthermore, the fastest dog would get 5 points, the second fastest 4 points etc.

The time limit for each dog was 10 minutes. However, it didn’t take that long for any of the dogs. So when it was my turn, I was a bit surprised. Well, I entered the "stage" and had Vixen mark the four dummies in each corner as they were thrown.

We had to start with the "water mark", then the jump, then the spruce and lastly the rough.

We were allowed to start when the last dummy had been thrown. I prepare to cast Vixen and discover that my whistle is still in my pocket. So I took a few seconds to find it. Vixen then hesitates very little when she reaches the "pool" with water but she enters willingly. The she hesitates when she has to pick up the dummy (a rubbery one with studs on it). However, she picks up, returns to me and delivers to hand.

Then I send her for the jump. First she tries to get under. However, she quickly jumps over, picks up and returns.

The next one is the one in the spruces. First she takes a wrong direction. I call her back and send her again. I normally use a white piece of plastic when I do direction work and I didn’t when I cast her the first time. The second time, I have the white plate in my hand and she goes directly to the spruces. After having searched a little, she finds the dummy and brings it back.

The last one is the one in the rough. She goes straight out, picks up and returns to me.

And then it was over.

I was very happy with our efforts. However, I should have thought more about the time factor; we used some time which wasn’t necessary to use. And we didn’t win. I don’t know how we were placed but I guess that we were among Top 3.

My reason for entering her into this competition is, that I would like to show the "hunting world" that a Toller is also a hunting dog which actually is able to work. The Danish Toller Club had a well-attended exhibition stand on the trade fair. However, none of the Tollers that were part of this exhibition stand had been entered into the completion – despite that most of them are hunting test dogs and would have done a great job. So I am happy that I showed up with Vixen – and that we did OK.

Leif took some video of our performance. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3TLBA7hNqg

Helle also videotape dus – from another angel. You can see that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgR_kAe4NhU&feature=youtu.be

Ny hvalp / New puppy

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Wed, March 28, 2018 13:41:45

DK:

UK:
We were supposed to keep a bitch from Vixen’s next litter. She would become Leif’s new training companion. However, this will not happen as we – in the light of Cookie’s illness – decided not to breed Vixen anymore.

So now we had to find a pup at another breeder. There are several good breeders who produce Tollers the way we like them: With a lot of passion and ability to work, with good temperament and health and an exterior that meets the standard.

I had an idea where I would look first – in Sweden. So I contacted three breeders who I respect a lot and who were planning on pups in 2018. All three told us that we were a bit late. They already had several puppy buyers lined up. So we realized that we might not get a pup this year.

The first litter to be born was a Digby Tollers litter. There were four bitches in this litter and we were pretty sure that there would not be a pup for us. The breeder confirmed this. However…… we were lucky that a bitch was suddenly available and she was offered to us. “YES PLEASE – we would love to buy her”. So on April 28, a new little girl will move in with us.

The dam of this litter is Digby Tollers Testarossa (Rozza) and the sire is Cairnton’s Pirate at Javahill (Johnny). I have seen Rozza on tests and I really like her. Johnny, however, is unknown for me. But I have heard good things about him, so I fell confident that this will be a great litter.

On Saturday, we will go to Sweden to see the litter for the first time (but not for the last time). And I am pretty sure that Leif will take a picture or two of the litter :-)

Weekend på Rømø Weekend on Rømø

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Wed, March 28, 2018 13:09:45

DK:

UK:
In the beginning of March, Helle and Kim invited us to come and stay with them in a rented summer cottage on Rømø (a small island in the waddensea at the west coast of Jutland). We were looking forward to getting away from home, being with the nicest people (and dogs) and taking walks at the Beach with the dogs - without lead.

The weather could be better; it was cold and it rained some of the time. But so what? We had warm and rainproof clothes.

As usual, Leif had brought his camera and took some pictures of the three redheads.

It was so great to get away from home and get some fresh air. And it makes it even better to spend the weekend with friends who also value a nice meal, good wine and one or two drinks :-)

Av min røv / My arse hurts

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Sat, February 17, 2018 18:05:38

DK

Hun virkede primært øm i bagparten.

UK
On Sunday, I noticed that Vixen seemed tired and introverted. I didn't think much about it. We had been at the show most of Saturday, so I thought she was marked by the many expressions. Also, we were "babysitting" Martin's two Labs all Sunday so I was guessing she just needed some time alone.

However, on Monday she was worse. She was really not feeling well. Sometimes she cheered up, but mostly she seemed a bit "depressed". She didn't want her dinner and this is not normal for her. Her temperature was 39.3 which is somewhat elevated but not enough for us to be very worried.

On Tuesday morning I called the vet. Vixen's temperature had fallen to 39.1. We got an appointment after lunch. I didn't feed her breakfast as I thought she might have to have general anaesthesia. I was wondering what could be wrong with her. It seemed to be a problem in her hind part so I thought of pyometra but it really wasn't the right time in her cycle. I also considered water tail, but even if her tail was just hanging it didn't look as water tail. Then I considered that it could be her anal glands that were the problem. But then again - she seemed worse than what could be justified by filled anal glands.

I gave Stella the Vet a quick update on my observations and thoughts. She quickly concluded that the problem was the anal glands. They were not just filled; a huge abscess had formed in one of them and it was so sore that she wasn't allowed to touch it. The other one also needed to be emptied. What came out of it had the same consistency as putty. Not all all strange that Vixen didn't feel well.

I left Vixen at the vet's who put her in general anaesthesia to empty the abscess, rinse the glands and put antibiotic into them. I got some pain killers and penicillin for further treatment during the next week.

The rest of the day, Vixen was really uncomfortable and she hadn't improved by Wednesday. She wasn't able to settle down and was hystrically licking her behind. I wasn't comfortable with the fact that she felt this bad and I didn't like the constant licking her behind. A dog's tongue is not the most hygienic. And things could easily turn to the worse if bacteria found their way to her anal glands. So I talked to Stella the Vet and we agreed that I should try adrenocortical hormone instead of the pain killers. Half an hour later after the first 3 x 4 mg adrenocortical hormone she calmed down. It was so nice to see.

On Tuesday next week she will be checked by the vet. I still give her both penicillin and Cortison. I am phasing out the adrenocortical hormone so that she will only have 1 x 4 mg when I see the vet on Tuesday.

You might think that it is an overreaction to be this worried about problems with the anal glands. But before I knew what the problem was, I feared the worse. We have just seen Cookie become very ill. I November last year we lost Daisy, and i March last year we lost Chili. So yes, I was really scared that it could be something really bad. Fortunately, it turned out to be pretty harmless - and I am grateful for that.

Årets første klubudstilling / First club show of the year

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Mon, February 12, 2018 19:49:08

DK:

Her kom hun dog til kort.

UK:

Now that we were in Vonge to be awarded with the trophy for Hunting Toller of the Year 2017, I might as well enter Vixen to the show. So I did. I also managed to persuade two of the Poké-kids to participate. Cookie was supposed to have participated also, but due to her illness and the cortisone treatment she had to stay home.

The first family member to enter the ring was Tessa (Wildmountain Tollers Eevee) and Alba (Wildmountain Tollers Mew). They were both entered in the Junior Class.

Both girls did so well. Their running had improved a lot and they were both doing well standing. Both were awarded a Very Good and were placed as no. 3 and 4 in a class of four bitches.

Tessa’s critique:

14 months old, good size, well-proportioned, excellent head, nose narrows as required, enough width of skull, nice dark eyes, excellent set ears, good length of neck, upper line could be stronger, descends a little behind shoulders and rises towards croup, nice front, well-angled shoulders, correct web between toes, a bit stronger legs would be desirable for her size, tail is set too low, loin too sloping, more angulation in rear part is desirable, excellent weather-proof coat, lovely temperament, hind leg movement a bit tight, moves well when running towards you, nice length of pace in the front, enough drive back.

Alba’s critique:

14 months old, good size, well-proportioned, feminine head, would prefer more width of skull, a bit more developed nose, correct set ears but would prefer them set closer to the head, beautiful dark eyes, correct bite, correct length of neck, upper line could be better, descends behind shoulder and rises towards croup, croup is too sloping, tail is set too low, correct web between toes, bones a bit too thin for her size, excellent coat, moves sound and good, nice length of pace, come and goes in a parallel , good temperament.

Alba was not at all impressed and decided to poo in the show ring. I have to stress, that she had been walked and had pooed just before they went into the ring.

Vixen was competing in the working class and there were only two dogs in this class. To my surprise she received an Excellent and a CK (champion quality). This meant that she had to compete for best bitch. She competed against five bitches and became 4th best bitch as the champion bitch wasn’t placed.

Vixen’s critique:

6 year old bitch in excellent condition, good size, well-developed and feminine, really nice shaped head, excellent expression, correct bite, appropriate developed nose, good width of skull, well-set ears, adequate long neck, excellent upper line, well-angulated in front, appropriate angulated behind, excellent quality of coat, nice temperament, correct web between toes, moves a little narrow behind, nice from the side and moves well towards.

Judge was Kresten Scheel. He was very pleasant and very considerate towards the dogs. He gave an open critique which I like as I always lean something.

I must admit that I was pretty surprised by the show results. Show is not our force so it was even more amazing that we did it with a good result. All in all, it was a very nice day in Vonge.

Årets Jagttoller 2017 / Hunting Toller of the Year 2017

Latest news / Sidste nytPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Mon, February 12, 2018 11:07:08

DK:

UK:
This Saturday, Vixen and I went to the Toller club’s first show this year to be presented with the trophy for Hunting Toller of the Year 2017.

You are eligible for this titel by participating in the Toller club’s toller hunting tests. Every prize at every level (beginner, open, and winner) gives a number of points – and the two best results counts. As to Vixen, these results were a 1. prize in beginners’ class (20 points) and a 2. prize in open class (21 points). This amounted to 41 points – only 1 single point ahead of the three that were places second. One of those was Helle and Cookie (Wildmountain Tollers Clever Cookie). Their highest points were 2 x 1. prizes in beginners’ class.

I am so happy and proud to win this title for the second year. Vixen and I have had our challenges (mostly me as Vixen is an almost perfect dog) and we started a bit late doing hunting training and hunting tests in a serious way. Vixen had some stress issues and thus some noise issues. There still is some stress and sometimes a bit of noise. But now I have learned to accept it. This doesn’t mean that I don’t still try to reduce both but I realize that it is unrealistic to expect that both stress and noise will disappear completely.

I am just as happy and proud of Helle and Cookie. They are just such a great team and Helle has managed to get some of the things that I struggle with under control. Now I just hope that Cookie recovers well from the IMRD and the cortisone treatment so that they can continue their hunting training and hunting tests.

UK:
On Saturday, Vixen will be attending this years' first Club show. She will also be presented with the Award "Hunting Toller of the Year 2017".

As always when I enter her to a show she starts to shed! So right now she has only half the coat as when she is in full coat.

I haven't trimmed her for a very long time. As I don't want her to look to newly trimmed at the show, I spent an hour yesterday trimming her. So now her paws, ears, the long hairs on her front legs and her "ass beard" were trimmed.

However, I need to do a Little adjusting later in the week.

Tollertræning Haunstrup

TræningPosted by Lis Kudsk [Webmaster] Mon, February 05, 2018 12:59:19

DK:

Fantastisk!

Træningen foregår i Haunstrup ca. hver 3. uge og løber over 6 gange.

UK:
A few weeks ago, Leif and I went to see Helle and Kim - and to check up on Cookie. Helle and I are sitting in the sofa talking when she suddenly says: "Now that I can't train with Cookie, I have a some extra time. What do you think about arranging some training for other Toller owners?". I would love to help other Toller owners being "dressed" for their first Toller hunting test, but I haven't felt I was fully equipped to do it. However, with Helle by my side I felt safe, so I said: "Sure!"

Within the next hour, we had posted an advert several places on Facebook, and it didn't take long before we had enough participants (8 dogs). Fantastic!

The training is held in Haunstrup approx. every three weeks with six lessons. We established a FB froup for the participants to share info etc.

This Saturday, we had the first training. Helle and I had spent some time planning the first training and she and Kim joined us for breakfast to agree on the last details.

At 13.00 we were ready for the first lesson. It was extremely Cold. All 8 dogs showed up for the first training. Four of them are my own Poké-kids. Those owners are just so amazing. The embrace everything that I expose them to. It is so great.

The first lesson was mostly about getting an idea how trained they were. So we did a lot of obedience, checking if they would retrieve etc. They were all at a nice level so now it is possible for us to plan the next lessons.

Of course, we ended the training with cake :-)

On Sunday evening, we uploaded detailed homework to the FB group so that everyone has some work to do until next time. We are looking forward to see their progress :-)
